The Maryam Hiyana Scandal

I'm pretty sure by now everyone has heard all da noise about the Hausa actress and her lover accidentally letting a raunchy video clip that wasn't meant to be seen by many slip...*sigh* Usually I try to keep my distance from such stories. You can find detailed info on Bahaushe mai Ban Haushi and Abubuwan da nake tunani. (Available both in Hausa and English.)

Well I can't really say much on the issue since I only read about it from online news and blogs. Times like these i wish I was back home where I can see people's reactions face to face...I have learnt not to trust international media.

To be honest, I'm not sure if I'm more disgusted by the culprits' action or by people's reaction to it. People are just impossibe.

My Thoughts

(a) Poor Maryam. Apparently she verbally didn't give her consent. She told him not to video it but he went ahead to do it.

(b) Poor Hausa Movie Industry. I can't count the number of times I have had to support them. People think they spread immorality. I always try to tell peole not to blame the actors but the changing society for all the goss you read about in Mags. I'm running out of ways to support them now since one of the actresses has been caught doing one of the acts they have been stereotyped to be engaged in. I'm afraid saying many positive things may be blindly running away from the bitter truth...

My Anger

(a) People have the guts to say the public is "over reacting". Huh? Over reacting? Really? This is a society where public display of affection is frowned upon. This kind of behaviour is totally unacceptable to many and I'm pretty sure they knew that before doing something this stupid. The way people reacted can totally be justified.

(b) I know people fornicate, it can't be stopped. Muslim society or not. But to actually capture it and expect it not to be spread around? That's just pushing your luck. Clearly they were looking for trouble.

(c) People have the guts to open their stinking Oral Orifices to say that it's "the girls fault for letting herself get caught up in this mess". ARE YOU KIDDING ME? How many people did you see in the clip? Ehn? One or two? So why the hell is it HER fault? Didn't she clearly not give her consent? Hello! two of them were engaged in the act! I think they were both at fault. If anybody should be blamed here it is THE OWNER OF THE DAMN CAMERA PHONE! Who in this case happens to be the boy or should I say man! (Did I mention he was married? Yup. M.A.R.R.I.E.D His wife left him though (Good on her!))

(d) Some people who have no idea what Islam is about, have never been or lived in Kano before and probably don't have the slightest clue about the northerners' lifestyle are using this as a case study to (mis)judge Muslims! Personally, I don't commend the act by Maryam and Bobo. But I have learnt not to impose my beliefs on other people. So please, respect yourselves and don't use this as an excuse to unleash the hatred you harbour for Muslims! Thanks to others who kept an open mind on this issue.

(e) Most of my favorite actors and actresses have now been banned for the length of 12 months for immoral behaviour. Fair enough. I mean, Nollywood does that too doesn't it? Wasn't Ini Edo recently banned from acting for immoral behaviour? So yeah, nothing new...

My Joy

(a) I'm actually glad that this happened because now the Hausa film industry can undergo a much needed reform. And when everything is cleared, Zahratique promises to still remain a loyal fan! I'm going to miss the films...but I will prefer it goes through a reform...

(b) I'm glad people didn't go ahead to start fight (I know my naija people o!) any small thing would lead to rikici. I'm happy most of the brouhaha is being passed on paper. You can't go wrong with paper...(except of course, if you shove it down someone elses mouth which I don't condone :)
(c) So far (or a far as I have read) no charges have been laid against Maryam Hiyana and Bobo and I doubt if any would be in the future. I think the public embarrassment is way too harsh as it is plus Maryam has been banned from acting for 5 years....( I doubt if she'd ever return to acting though).

*sigh* I'm so glad I let that out!

Good comment you got there. Do you also know that the video clip is selling like hot cake now. People queue to watch it which goes to show the hypocrisy endemic in our society.
Like I said in my blog the girl is a victim and should not be allowed to wallow in self pity.

@ Myabubakar ad talatu-carmen. I like the way you two portrayed it on ur blogs. I hope people get over these and move on with their own lives. Some people are taking upon themselves like its government work.... They shud just consider it as one of those things because I tell you, the society is not as good as people make it seem. I hate the fact that we are living with pseudo-morality. If things are bad, show it! If things are good, flaunt it! It's so uch better than living a lie.

@ Fatoumatta: My dear, it is draining isn't it? Don't worry I'm sure all the fizz wud die out in no time...Ya kike?

Well, I'd like 2 disagree wif u... but just a lil. Wasn't in 9ja 2 C how people really took the thing, but from here, I really think people OVER REACTED or to say the least OVERLY HYPOCRITICAL. Look, like myabubakar said, its selling like HOT cake. Why would people complain on how immoral the "thing" is, and then still queue to watch it (and even buy it?). I mean people puhleasse... who are we kiddin' here?
Our society is rotting, and we just found out the hard way, and instead of tackling the real issues, we just tryin' 2 find a scapegoat, and in this sad instance, Maryam Hiyana.
All am tryin' 2 say is dat:
- For Boryam (Bobo & Maryam), what they did IS totally WRONG, no doubt about that.
- For the Hausa film industry, it was quite unfortunate, but as finely put out by Zahratique, they got a much needed reform.
- To the people, please don't act saints and give the guys a break. Who knows what you do when no one is seeing you?
- To Maryam, the next time a guy wants to record you, kick him in his crouch and flush the camera down the drain (Trust me its less dramatic than what people would do when they see it again)...
- To Bobo, you shud find a better role model than Rick Salomon please (Paris Hilton's sex tape boyfriend)...

- And to Zahratique, sorry 4 d long comment, ma blog is just for fictional stories and silly poems... No serious issues... Dats why...

Pwew, that was a strong case, you presented. Ofcourse, both are to be blamed. It's just disgusting

@ SPyda...What are we disagreeing about? You have just said my mind! But hey, remember that we cannot generalise the whole "overeacting" bit. Sure some people over-reacted, but we are talking about the north collectively. Millions and millions of people. Surely there are some that showed genuine anger and not under false pretences. People are horrible. They are using the poor girl as a scape goat. I hope she gets on with her life after all this...

@ Ugo Daniels: Yup, I don't condone da action.

It is completely silly that you are condemning the girl for having sex as if no one does it.

I quote
For Boryam (Bobo & Maryam), what they did IS totally WRONG, no doubt about that.

How the hell do you think you came into this world? You are condemning people around the world for being sensationalist when you yourself condemn her for having sex. It is a natural thing and does not make her less or more human, a whore, or anything like that. I find it hilarious that the movie industry banned her for a leaked tape. What people do in their bedrooms is not for you to be hypocritical about and scrutinize. If it were for people like you, the world would sadly, not be populated. And if it were not for the repression that people in your country face, trust me there would be less immorality and sneaking around, lower teenage pregnancy and less aids. Why do you think countries that are open and talk to their children about sex have the lowest number of teenage pregnancies?...think about it. Be open about sex and maybe promiscuity might not be such a problem...

It's cool to look more into all these comments. However, the good news is that both Kano and its people have already moved on ahead. Hiyana and her sexcapade has now become an episode in the past, albeit buried in archives; which (trust Kano people) may be referred to from time to time whenever the need arises.

I have been following the maryam hiyana incident. the government and the fundementalists have made her a scape goat and also made hausa film industry a scape goat. See the recent banning of the film 'tsintsiya' and harassment of its producer. See the harassment of hausa writers. In the name of morality, the kano government is acting like a dictator and more as a taliban. The government is robbing people of entertainment and denyinglivelihood to scores of people who are not dependent on government alms, but self independent. I request that the writers, hausa film industry should move to a safer location within nigeria and pursue their professions and teach a lesson to the kano government and religious fundementalists. We in north pretend that the things shown in the films are not happening in our society. We pretend to be pious and infalliable. Films have to have a great touch of reality and are mainly for entertainment rather than preaching morality. If people want to hear about morality, we can recite holy quran at home or attend the mosque. Fils are not meant for that. Nigeria has suffered a lot with obsession with religion, as long as this happens we are doomed to be underdevoloped. The government and the traditional rulers should concentrate on infrastructural and industrial development, rather that put all their resources and energy in harassing film makers - artists and writers.

Finding family. The trouble is always here on till death do you part. You may grow thinking big on how you take good care of your mother, father and all members of that family that which you happened to know. Undecided faith brings changes into once smiling cycle life, cometh it friends, enemies, alias and struggles to fit existence. Then you begin to unlock relationship in their true feature. I have now realize who I am, what my family are and who we are.
